OWN Trust Blog

Chief Executive or Trust Leader?

Welcome to the first in an ongoing series of blog posts that we are developing at OWN Trust. In the coming half-termly publications you can expect to see a variety of approaches from a variety of Trust members but, as this is the first, it is up to me as Chief Executive Officer to set the ball rolling.

Chief Executive Officer (or CEO) is not the greatest of titles to be associated with our primary objective; educating and supporting children.  It’s not a title I personally like either. It sounds too business-like and removed from the work we do with our schools and our children. It would be much better to be known as OWN ‘Trust Leader’; responsible for leading the Trust to achieve its objectives, and reinforcing the message that I/we have been entrusted with: the wellbeing and education of our future generations.

In essence, my role has been to secure the best outcomes for our children, but often in an indirect way. Initially, my capacity was limited, trying to achieve this in a little more than one day each week. Setting up systems within the Trust that not only meet our legal obligations but also support efficiency in getting to know our schools and how best to support them, takes time. Since mid-April 2021, this has been eased by the transition of my role to 4 days per week.

Too often the public face that is presented of a CEO is one of being business-focused, cost saving, obsessed with numbers and not children, putting money before people, etc. I can see how this appears to be the case on the outside, but it’s certainly not the case from within.

Of course, there are elements of running a business, but if that means we are operating in a way that generates funding and capacity to do more for our children then surely it’s for the right reasons. If we can provide effective estates' management from within, for example, rather than being forced to outsource to expensive suppliers, then surely that’s a cost-saving that’s in the interests of our school communities.

People, especially children, are always at the forefront of our minds when making decisions at Trust level. Equally, the staff are crucial. In 2015, Richard Branson (and I think he could be seen as successful with Virgin!) tweeted ‘If you look after your staff well, they will look after your customers. Simple.’ If our ‘customers’ are children and families, then why wouldn’t the same principles apply in OWN Trust?

In recent weeks, you will have seen news items in the OWN Trust News section of the website about our Leadership meetings and other Trust-wide approaches that are now being implemented. It is through these that we hope to see the real impact of being in the OWN Trust on all of our children. Then we can start sharing with you all the evidence of what makes being part of OWN so beneficial.

I hope this has given some insight into the workings behind the scenes.

Thank you for reading our first e-newsletter.

OWN Trust Training Day

By Simon Eardley, Head Teacher, Orton Wistow Primary School, OWN Trust

The vision for the OWN Trust is that we create Opportunities to Work together and to Nurture talent. When creating the Trust, we knew from the outset that we wanted to create opportunities for staff across the schools to work together. Since 2019, we have created peer groups across the Trust and the opportunity to come together at joint training days has been an integral part of this.

On Tuesday, the 4th of January 2022. I led training for teachers and leaders across the Trust. The focus of this training was our ongoing work to align policy and practice around curriculum development and improvement. Part of this work has involved looking at the neuroscience research around how children learn and what we as teachers need to consider when developing a curriculum as well as our pedagogical approaches. As a Lead Inspector for Ofsted, I am also keen that leaders across the Trust are confident in their own abilities to articulate their school's vision and approach to the curriculum if and when they are inspected.

During this training event, teachers and leaders learnt more about the science of learning and the priorities we must have when designing and defining our curriculum. There was the opportunity for each leader to talk to, interview and build relationships with their peers at the other schools. We see ourselves as one organisation based on different sites. We know that there is a great deal of expertise and talent across all of the schools within the Trust and that by fostering and developing closer links between staff across the trust, we can ensure the highest quality of education is provided for children at the OWN Trust.

There will be additional training for staff in the coming terms to develop this area further, and we are confident that the new relationships that have been created between groups of colleagues will continue to grow and develop, going from strength to strength.

Monthly Trust Leadership Group Meeting 21.01.22

By Stuart Mansell, CEO, OWN Trust

On Friday 21st January 2022, the OWN Trust CEO, Stuart Mansell, met with head teachers from the three OWN Trust Schools - Jacki Mitchell (Woodston Primary School), Simon Eardley (Orton Wistow Primary School), and Nick File (Nene Valley Primary School) - together with the deputy head teachers Colin Marks (Orton Wistow Primary School) and Trevor Goakes (Woodston Primary School).  Due to COVID, the Leadership Group meeting took place virtually.

The Leadership Group meeting takes place approximately monthly. It is an informal advisory committee that supports the Trust Board, as detailed within the scheme of delegation. The Leadership group advises on overall strategic areas such as the Trust-wide vision and values and setting Trust objectives for improvement, through to operational matters such as policy development and quality assurance of the curriculum and its effectiveness.

A range of structures and cycles inform the agenda for the meetings, including working parties or subgroups for considering areas such as assessment data, SEN provision, the effectiveness of Early Years and provision for phonics.

The meeting on the 21st January 2022 predominantly covered the Trust improvement Plan for 2021-2023.

Our strategic plan covers 4 main areas:

Our Passion This covers the vision and values for the Trust; particularly around the long-term outcomes for children and how we plan to achieve them.

Our Family A focus on staffing; strategies for recruiting and retaining the best people to achieve the outcomes for children that we want.

Our Purpose The real crux of what the Trust is about; how we ensure the effectiveness of our teaching and learning. This is done through a school review of the curriculum and how it is delivered, as well as monitoring and use of assessment.

Our Future Strategies that support the sustainability of the Trust; whether through finance, governance, school improvement or estates management.

Each area will be returned to in more detail in future news and a 5-year strategy will be published later this term.

Plant a Tree (or three) for the Jubilee!

By Stuart Mansell, CEO, OWN Trust

In the last few months, all three OWN Trust schools have taken part in the Queen's Green Canopy project to 'Plant a Tree for the Jubilee'. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree -planting initiative to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. People across the United Kingdom are invited to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ to enhance our environment. You can find out more by visiting The Queen’s Green Canopy.

Woodston Primary School had been nominated as the chosen school for Peterborough and the initial planting ceremony took place in the autumn term. As this was an official ceremony, it was attended by the Deputy Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Andrew Riddington, and the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Stephen Lane.

The OWN Trust Leadership Group then decided that instead of just one school taking part from the Trust, it would be fantastic if all of its schools took part in this important and beneficial initiative.

Both Nene Valley Primary School and Orton Wistow Primary School were provided with trees by the OWN Trust, and these were planted at the start of the Spring term.

All three schools will be added to the Queen's Green Canopy Map & Education Hub. It is great for the children of OWN Trust to feel part of the wider community of the United Kingdom and to know that they are taking part in an historic national event.

A Day in the Life...

Each half-term, we learn more about the daily life of those who work in the OWN Trust.

This week it's the turn of Kay Gaston, Teaching Assistant at Woodston Primary School, and Nick File, Head of Nene Valley Primary School.

Before I come to work I...have a cup of tea in bed and read the news and check the weather (I always walk to work) because there is never bad weather just inappropriate clothing. I feed the dog, the bird and myself and load the dishwasher.

My typical day includes... I work in reception supporting my wonderful teacher and amazing team when needed. I always get an opportunity for a walk around at lunchtime as I do a daily lunchtime duty outside apart from Wednesday when I cover P.P.A.

Right now I'm feeling...thankful that all our team who have recently had COVID have not suffered too many ill effects.

My favourite work snack is... Flapjack Wednesday when our lovely kitchen staff give us all a little hump day treat.

To relax I...enjoy being active: walking and cycling. I love camping festivals and mountain walking at weekends.

My most memorable moment is...walking up mount Snowden and unexpectedly receiving a proposal at the summit. I said yes!

One day, I would like to...have training in how to run forest schools and bring it to Woodston. In my personal life, I would like to travel around in my camper van.

Before I come to work I...either run with our two cocker spaniels or squeeze in a bit of yoga.  This is sometimes interrupted by my youngest son - who can downward dog far better than me!

My typical day includes... Everything; teaching in EYFS, communicating with parents, ensuring all classrooms have teachers (hopefully) in them, telling a good story to lighten the mood, checking emails, planning for the future, supporting behaviour, developing the pupils in the school and ...drinking tea and eating biscuits!

Right now I'm feeling...positive!  The team at Nene Valley helps maintain that positivity, from the cleaner who drops everything to go for a walk with the EYFS children to SLT who tell me I am getting it right.

My favourite work snack is...cake chocolate, biscuits...you get the idea.

To relax I...paint (by numbers), ride a bike and sail.  I also value my family so spend as much time with them as I can.

My most memorable moment is...getting told off at school for struggling to spell 'shin'!  (Maybe not the most memorable!).  Getting married in Croatia - just in case my wife ever gets to read this!

One day, I would like to...travel Europe/ Scandinavia in a campervan.
