A Message from the Chair of Trustees

A Summary of this Year by the Chair of Trustees

Since writing for the OWN Trust's July 2024 newsletter, I have discovered that 12 months truly is a long time. At that time, I was writing a farewell to our first CEO, Stuart Mansell, and very much looking forward to Lorraine Greco starting in her role as our second CEO.

The last year

Navigating uncharted waters is characterised by uncertainty and change, and this certainly was a journey through choppy waters as Lorraine came into an academy trust geared up to drive forward with our growth plans. A different direction for education came with a new government removing grants that supported academy trusts to cover the costs of maintained schools to become academies, as well as removing the requirement for schools rated ‘Inadequate’ by OFSTED to join academy trusts. Whereas OWN Trust had been working very closely with several maintained schools to support their improvement, this was no longer part of our ‘growth’ agenda, and the trust began to look at different ways of developing under Lorraine’s leadership.

During her time with OWN, Lorraine dealt confidently with several staffing issues, as well as supporting one of our schools to achieve much-improved outcomes for all pupils. In fact, our overall trust end of Key Stage 2 results are higher than national.  She also led with confidence on issues such as branding, curriculum, and assessment alignment.

Sadly, despite her successes, after realising that she could not complete the growth agenda that had been the Trust’s main mission and the uncertainty of the national education agenda, Lorraine decided she would consider different career options and is looking forward to completing inspections for OFSTED as an HMI.

The decision to merge

The Trust board had to make a very difficult decision about the future of OWN Trust and whether we would recruit a new CEO or seek to merge with another trust that shared our values. We understood that the drive by the government was now for small trusts to merge to create stronger, larger trusts, with the rationale that this was more effective at driving an improvement in educational outcomes and operational efficiency. We considered the fact that the DfE expects most trusts will aim to serve a minimum of 7,500 pupils or run at least 10 schools by 2030. After carrying out our ‘due diligence’ by carrying out deep research into every academy trust operating in Peterborough, the Trust board shortlisted two to come and make presentations since they shared many of our values and ambitions. At the end of this challenging process, the Trust board voted unanimously to invite Meridian Trust to be our merger partner.

Mark Woods, the Meridian CEO, is known by many within our Trust as he may have taught you, been a governor at your school, and, of course, was one of our founding trustees. His children were also educated at Nene Valley before moving on to Nene Park Academy. Mark’s heart is certainly in our schools.

Our OWN trust board decided this was the moment to step aside, so the process of merger could be overseen by an interim board, one which I continue to chair. Our new board consists of myself, Shirley Jamieson (Chair of Trustees at Meridian), Richard Astle (Company Director), Andrew Johnson (CEO West Norfolk Academy Trust), Thomas Musson (Chair of LGC at Nene Valley), Stuart Mansell (Ex-CEO OWN Trust) and finally, Jacki Mitchell (Ex headteacher at Woodston). This constitutes an incredibly strong trust board, and we have already held our first meeting.

An application was made to the DfE for a merger, and last week, after much hard work over a very short period, we were delighted to learn that this has been agreed. Our aim at present is for the merger to be completed by 1st November.

Woodston Primary School

There have been other challenges for our trust schools throughout the year, and I want to express my thanks to the staff at Woodston for also negotiating their own choppy waters during a time of considerable staffing instability. The strength of OWN trust was exemplified in being able to make use of Colin Marks, Neil Reilly, and Trevor Goakes in sharing the leadership role and ensuring that standards and outcomes improved significantly. Praise must also go to all staff in our other two schools who stepped up to cover their headteachers and trust executive deputy when they were placed at Woodston.

I have enjoyed my visits during the year, meeting staff and children, and I remain immensely proud of the unique identity and achievements of each school. Moving on to next year, Woodston will enjoy strong and settled leadership under the very experienced interim headship of Nicola Lamond, and she will be ably supported by Trevor Goakes and Alex Garner. Meridian will ensure they recruit a permanent headteacher at a time that is right for the school. I believe strongly that Nene Valley and Orton Wistow will continue to go from strength to strength.

Learning Points

From a personal point of view, what have I learnt from the last 12 months? Firstly, change is inevitable since life itself is full of unexpected turns. Secondly, to view setbacks as opportunities rather than failures. Next, I have discovered that it is important to be able to ask for help and to make use of the strong teams around me. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I have never lost sight of my values and the values under which OWN Trust was set up because they have allowed me to maintain my focus on providing the very best education and opportunity for every child in our schools.

In conclusion

To conclude with the naval analogy, navigating the choppy waters of the last twelve months has taken an immense amount of time and effort, not just from myself but from my fellow trustees too, but we have sailed in the right direction. My thanks go to the previous trust board and our interim trust board for their commitment to our cause and crewing our ship. The shore is coming ever closer, and it looks as though OWN’s ship will be sailing safely into port very soon.

Peterborough Music Hub Summer WCIT Concert

Our Year Three and Five children participated in a concert at the Salvation Army Citadel in Peterborough last week.

Year Three - Violin and Cellos

The children in Year Three have been learning to play violin and cello with Mr King. The children were excited to showcase their talents in a concert on Wednesday the 9th July 2025, which was hosted by the Salvation Army to celebrate the instrumental learning that has taken place this term. The children proudly shared their musical achievements by performing before an audience of peers from schools across the city at the Salvation Army Citadel.

Year Five - Drums

The concert was an opportunity for Year Five pupils to showcase their musical talents on the Djembe drums which they have been learning this term.

We had a lovely morning. We arrived at 9am and our Year 3 pupils were the first to perform their violins and cellos with Mr King – they were fantastic! We then watched other schools perform their various instruments. In between performances, teachers from the Music Hub taught us new songs. Our favourites were ‘Penguins Attention’ and ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ as they made us laugh and were fun to perform. We were the last class to perform our instrument after sitting so patiently through others’ performances. We performed the song ‘I Like Bananas’ where each child got the opportunity to perform their solo (8 beats each). It was lovely to see their concentration and confidence when doing this.

Our drumming instructor said Woodston were the best-behaved school and sat beautifully in-between performances. Mrs Bali (Year 3 teacher at Woodston) loved Year 5’s performance. She said it gave her goosebumps.

Woodston Choir Parent Performance

On Tuesday 8th July 2025, the Woodston Choir, led by Miss Marshall and Mrs Gregory, performed for parents in the hall after school.

This event was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase the incredible dedication and talent of our amazing school choir.

The children spent some time having a final rehearsal before the parents arrived. They then performed a harmonised version of Shotgun, Someone You Loved, This Is Me, and Titanium. The children really enjoyed singing to their grown-ups and had so much fun with it. They were especially proud to showcase their newest skill: harmonising in two parts.

Woodston Choir has worked tremendously hard in 2025. We are excited to start preparing for Young Voices 2026.

Miss Marshall commented: “The children were fabulous! They performed with confidence and pride, truly shining as they showcased the techniques and skills they have learned over the past seven months.”

'If you were an Engineer, what would you do? - National Competition

We are thrilled to share that our whole school recently took part in the exciting national competition, "If You Were an Engineer, What Would You Do?" This inspiring initiative encouraged pupils to become real-world problem-solvers!

This competition was a great way of bringing engineering into the classroom! Even though engineering is all around us, we often find it difficult to describe what it is, let alone how to become an engineer! By using this creative theme, we can encourage learners to develop their listening, literacy and observational skills, develop creative problem-solving approaches, illustration with annotation, and letter writing for a purpose.

Each child identified a problem they see in the world around them and designed a creative engineering solution to tackle it. They illustrated and annotated their invention ideas and wrote persuasive letters to real engineers, explaining why their idea could make a difference.

As recognition for their hard work and brilliant thinking, every participating pupil received a certificate from a professional engineer — a fantastic way to celebrate their innovation and effort.

We are incredibly proud of the creativity, thoughtfulness, and engineering spirit shown by all our young inventors!

West Stow Anglo Saxon Trip

Year 4 had a fantastic day visiting West Stow Anglo-Saxon village, as part of our History learning. We began the day exploring replica houses. These have been created by archaeologists, who are trained to discover the different ways the Anglo-Saxons built houses. In the afternoon, we looked around the museum and handled some real Anglo-Saxon artefacts. We discussed the artefacts in our groups and then went back to the class to talk about about what we had discovered.

Year 4 2 Can Learn

A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us for our recent Year 4 2 Can Learn session — what a fantastic turnout! It was wonderful to see so many parents taking time out of their day to support the children and their learning.

The children were so proud of their beautiful illuminated letters, which showed off their creativity and focus. The parents' encouragement made the experience even more special for them, and we truly appreciate their continued support.

Year 5 Space Centre Trip

Written by a child in Year 5...

On our space centre trip, we went into an auditorium, which had lots of fascinating facts about our galaxy. It even had an interactive quiz! There were four whole floors full of facts about our awesome Solar System. You can't forget about all the games along the way (they were really fun). That was our once in a lifetime trip to the Space Centre.

Year 6 PGL

Our Year 6 PGL residential trip was a whirlwind of fun, laughter, and adventure! From paddling across the water in canoes to navigating forest trails blindfolded, the children have shown incredible teamwork, courage, and enthusiasm.

As the sun set, we gathered around the campfire to toast marshmallows and share stories — the perfect end to an action-packed day. From problem-solving, to abseiling and trapeze climbing, the children challenged themselves and supported each other along the way and by the end of the trip, spirits were high and the energy buzzing. It was a fantastic three days filled with exciting activities and unforgettable memories.

Discover more about Meridian Trust

Meridian Trust is a successful and inclusive multi-academy trust built on a deep commitment to people and communities. OWN Trust is currently in consultation to merge with Meridian Trust in the near future.

Introducing Meridian Trust

For more than a decade, Meridian Trust has grown into one of the country’s most respected and admired academy trusts. It is recognised as a national leader in education and a source of pride to the families, staff and communities it serves.

The values of Meridian Trust are at the heart of everything it does:

  • Every child is known, equally valued, and supported to achieve their full potential across all its academies.

  • Every community benefits from the facilities and services Meridian provides.

  • Every member of staff is part of strong networks, offered excellent career opportunities, and supported in a human and respectful way where they are equally valued.

  • Every school retains and continues to develop its unique identity, while actively sharing and contributing to the Trust’s values, curriculum approaches, and operational systems.

While its schools share Meridian Trust’s values, curriculum principles and support structures, the Trust ensures that well-run schools retain and build on their individual ethos and place in the community.

A Growing and Experienced Trust

Today, Meridian Trust includes:

  • 1 all-through school (ages 4–19)

  • 14 primary schools

  • 12 secondary schools

  • 3 special schools

The Trust is continuing to grow carefully and purposefully. Crosshall Infant and Junior Schools are expected to join in September 2025. In addition, three new schools are currently in development: Saltbrook Primary (Sawtry), Greensands SEMH (Gamlingay), and Darwin Green Secondary (Cambridge). Due diligence has also recently begun with Manor School in Raunds.

Meridian Trust supports schools across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Bedfordshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, working in close partnership with the communities it serves.

Meet the CEO: A Familiar Face

Mark Woods, CEO of Meridian Trust, has led the organisation since 2013, overseeing its growth from a trust of two schools to more than thirty.

Mark began his teaching career in Peterborough at Deacon’s School, later moving into leadership roles at Jack Hunt School and Sawtry Village Academy. He became Vice Principal at Swavesey Village College, and subsequently Headteacher of Nene Park Academy, now a key Meridian Trust school.

Mark is highly familiar with the OWN Trust community. He previously served as a Governor at Nene Valley and Woodston Primary Schools and was a Trustee of OWN Trust from 2019 to 2024. He now returns as Interim CEO of OWN Trust, while continuing to lead Meridian Trust.

With a strong understanding of the local context, families and school communities in Peterborough, Mark is committed to ensuring that any transition is well-informed, well-managed, and focused on the best outcomes for children.

Beyond his educational work, Mark is a lifelong Peterborough United (Posh) fan, a Trustee of University Centre Peterborough, and a long-time supporter of strong local partnerships.

How Meridian Trust Supports Schools

Schools that join Meridian Trust benefit from:

  • Strong educational networks and curriculum support

  • Robust operational services including finance, estates, HR, IT and health & safety.

  • Access to SEND expertise and professional networks.

  • A powerful recruitment and retention offer, including the Meridian Teaching School Hub and ITT programmes, which train over 150 new teachers annually.

  • Local partnerships, practical support, and the capacity of a national leader in education.

Meridian Trust provides challenge, support and opportunity for every pupil, every member of staff, and every school.

Stronger Together

By joining Meridian Trust, OWN Trust schools would become part of a wider family of schools working together for the benefit of children, staff and the community. Each school would retain its own identity and ethos while gaining the stability and opportunities that come with being part of a strong and experienced trust.

Meridian Trust has a deep understanding of Peterborough and is firmly committed to it. From primary through to secondary, the Trust is already rooted in the city and looks forward to extending its work in partnership with schools, families and communities.
