Continuous Professional Development - Summer Update

By Nick File, Executive Deputy Headteacher, OWN Trust

The summer term sees OWN Trust’s five ECTs successfully complete their first year and an HLTA complete the apprenticeship route to teaching - congratulations to them all!

ECTs now get support for two years after their initial teacher training, benefiting from a three-year induction into teaching.  Each school has at least one ECT, who is supported by a more experienced teacher to mentor them and support their progress through the year.

The ECTs have had access to CPD within schools, the Early Career Framework via conferences, and online learning, which has reinforced their learning from last year.  Most of them came through the Teach East route into teaching and have benefited from a strong initial teacher training program.

ECTs along with the rest of the Trust staff have continued to develop their use of Walkthrus as a toolkit to support solutions to problems they identify in their classrooms.  These techniques present a reliable and research-based toolkit of pedagogical practices that can be learned and actioned to improve pupil outcomes.

From September, the Trust will have ten ECTs when four join Woodston Primary and a HLTA who has progressed through an apprenticeship route stays at Orton Wistow Primary.  This represents 20% of the teaching workforce who are at an early stage in their development. As a trust, we are keen to develop and retain these teachers in the early parts of their careers.
