Message from the CEO

Dear OWN Trust Colleagues...

Wow - what a busy first half-term it has been. I have really enjoyed working with and getting to know the central services team, understanding their roles and the impact this has on allowing our schools to focus on their key priority of education.

You shared with me on the INSET day that you wanted to see more of the central team in your schools. I hope you haven't regretted that as you have seen me walking around classrooms! Teaching is my passion and seeing children receive high quality teaching and learning creates such an energy for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my opportunities to visit all the classrooms across each of our schools, looking at phonics, maths and our approach to reading beyond phonics. At the end of next half-term, I hope to be able to provide a response to some of the wider areas of feedback that you shared.

Some positive highlights for me have definitely been the infamous 'Wistow Sausage roll', which was as delicious as promised. I also visited some exceptional phonics lessons at Orton Wistow, which were as good (if not better as they actually had children in them!) as the recorded sessions on the Little Wandle website. This has resulted in me recommending to the school that they apply to become a Little Wandle Champion School.  This is exactly what we want from our trust - exceptionality - and I look forward to working with the other two schools in finding and celebrating their exceptionality.

I have also seen some really strong examples of schools helping one another out. For example, office staff from the other schools supported Woodston with their census arrangements whilst they were managing staff absence in that area. There is a very strong culture across the trust of wanting to work together, and I am keen to build on that even further.

I am also excited that we have now installed our electronic sign in system for staff and visitors at both Orton Wistow and Nene Valley (Woodston to follow once front of house work is complete). This is a starting point to improving our safeguarding culture across the trust - again, to reach exceptionality and the highest possible standards. Please do use the system every day to sign in and out and please test out our school office staff on their new visitor welcome procedures!

Next half-term we look to implement SCR tracker across the trust, which means we will have a centralised single central record that contains all of our safeguarding information around the checks we complete on staff and visitors to ensure they are safe to be working with our pupils.

Lastly, we will be moving to an online recruitment system called My New Term, which will allow us to standardise our recruitment procedures and advertise any roles within our trust nationwide. We know that staff recruitment in schools is becoming a greater challenge with every single year, so we must ensure that our adverts reach the biggest audience and attract the strongest candidates for any positions across our school.

Next half-term, my focus will be on attendance. We know that there is a big pressure on schools to improve pupil attendance, and we must all recognise our responsibility to support this, including making sure that staff attendance is also as high as it can be.

I look forward to the next half-term. My school visits will be slightly fewer as I try and expand my knowledge of Peterborough and our surrounding schools. I am also excited to be training as a Lead Trust Reviewer for Challenge Partners as I think Trust OFSTED inspections aren't too far away in the future, so to have this insight will be hugely valuable.

We also begin our SRMA audit, which is an audit run by the DFE, looking at finance, leadership and governance of the trust. I always welcome these kinds of things as I am always keen to know what we are doing well, but what we could be doing even better.

I look forward to seeing you next half-term and seeing the Christmas build up. Primary Schools are the most magical place to be at this time of year.

Best wishes

Lorraine Greco

This month, our Year 5 Mathematicians travelled to Laxton Junior School to take part in a maths challenge.

We are so proud to announce that our Year 5 children won. Congratulations to them all!

Year 5 - Hilltop Residential

Forty-four Year 5 children embarked on three days of adventurous activity at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Norfolk. During their visit, the children were encouraged to embrace 'challenge by choice', the motto for the centre, with the hope that many of them would step slightly out of their comfort zone to undertake activities which they may find difficult.

Year 3 Family Learning

On Thursday 10th of October, Year Three welcomed parents to their Family Learning session on GPS.  All parents were given a tour of what GPS looks like at Orton Wistow and how we teach it in Year Three and across the school.

Harvest Food Collection

The foodbank came into the school on Thursday to collect all the food that had been donated. The weight of all the food was 212KG, which is approximately 500 meals.

Christmas Card Competition

Children are again invited to enter the competition to design a Christmas Card for St Andrew's Church. Rev Sarah attended an assembly at school to launch the competition.  The winning design will be on the parish Christmas card, which is distributed to all houses in Alwalton, Orton Wistow and Orton Northgate!

Staff Social Events 2024 - 2025

We have two social events coming up next year.

Quiz Night at NVPS on 28th March 2025

The first is a FREE Quiz Night at Nene Valley Primary School, which is kindly being organised by Aaron Shang, Director of Learning. Following the same format as previous years, staff can choose a team of six and bring food and drink to enjoy in a communal buffet. There will also be a prize for the winning team. Woodston Primary School are currently unbeaten as winners for two years in a row, so it will be interesting to see which school tops the leader board this time round!

Party at the Fleet on 7th June 2025

A popular event last year, the summer party at the Fleet will take place in June with a buffet, disco and bar. We hope that staff from across the Trust will join us to celebrate the end of the academic year.

Booking details for both of these events to follow soon.

New CEO Visits Schools' Inset Days

We welcomed the new OWN Trust CEO, Lorraine Greco, at the start of September and she visited each school during the inset day to introduce herself to teachers and TAs, set out her vision and priorities for the Trust and gain feedback from staff.

Leadership Group Meetings in September and October

The Leadership Group, which includes Headteachers from the three schools, the Executive Deputy Headteachers and the CEO, meets regularly to discuss different aspects of the Trust. These meetings enable everyone to have a voice and work towards a collaborative and aligned approach across the trust, whilst not losing sight of each school's autonomy.

Digital Sign-In System Rolled Out in the Schools

IT and Estates staff from the Trust Central Services Team have been busy installing a new Digital Sign-In System called vPass across the schools.

The digital sign-in system will help the Trust manage the flow of staff and visitors into the school buildings more efficiently while enhancing security and improving the visitor and staff sign-in experience.

Trust Board Meeting 17/09/24

OWN Trust is overseen by a Board of Trustees who meet regularly with the CEO to discuss developments and progress across the Trust. At this meeting in September, the Chair of Trustees, Mary Foreman, commented: "The year ahead will certainly be exciting at OWN Trust and for our trustees and local governors as we work with Lorraine to achieve the priorities within our strategic plan."

Peterborough Primary Headteachers' Cream Tea Event September 2024

OWN Trust works with the Peterborough City Council to facilitate events for Primary School Headteachers in Peterborough. On Thursday 19th September, Peterborough City Council and OWN Trust hosted a Cream Tea event at the Orton Hall Hotel. It was an opportunity for senior leaders to welcome new colleagues, catch up with familiar faces, and meet Local Authority representatives.

Quality of Education Committee Meeting 01.10.24

The OWN Trust Education Team, consisting of Lorraine Greco (CEO), Sarah Levy (Director of Education), Nick File, and Trevor Goakes (both Executive Deputy Headteachers) are all working to set targets and began targeted work in specific areas this term within all the schools. They meet fortnightly as a team to discuss work streams and priorities.

Governance Volunteers Update Autumn 1

This half-term trustees, governors and associates met together on 11 September for safeguarding training with Phil Nash from Cambridgeshire County Council. The session also included online safety training from OWN Trust IT Manager, Adam Charlton and a chance for Local Governance Committees to meet and plan the year ahead. We also said goodbye to one of our founding trustees, Mark Woods, who has given freely of his time, experience and wisdom to OWN Trust and will be greatly missed.

Pupil Premium Leader Meeting

On 23rd October 2024, a virtual meeting took place with the Pupil Premium Leaders in each school, Laura Brough (Woodston), Rachel Tansley (Orton Wistow) and Katie Brown (Nene Valley), together with the Trust CEO, Lorraine Greco. This meeting was an opportunity for a professional discussion between pupil premium leaders and the CEO around the pupil premium grant.
